that was not hick poetry, that be hick conjugation. I'm not much on writing poetry. I prefer to recite it.
Here's a litte ditty I learned in grade school:
    It was midnight on the ocean
    not a street car was in sight
    the sun was shining brightly
    for it rained all day that night
    It was a summer's day in winter
    and the snow was raining hard
    as a barefoot boy with shoes
    on stood sitting in the grass.

In 1982 I wrote a second part to the poem:
    he was swimming across the desert
    as a horse flew through the air
    dropping postcards made of china
    of a girl with long short hair
    he was painting with a toothbrush
    an uphill flowing stream
    when the silence of his snoring
    awoke him from his dream
